Spring Breakers
Spring Breakers
Just saw Harmony Korine's Spring Breakers from 2012. One of the most interesting looks at class and capitalism I've seen in a while. I see a lot of analysis of the movie as being just a moral argument against youth culture but I think it sets it's sights a much higher. There's this recurring refrain about "getting that cash" and the movie makes a point to show the characters motivations for their violent, hedonistic actions not just blaming them for being stupid or sinful the way maybe a PureFlix movie would (like the stark contrast between the gray campus and the colorful beach scenes). There's a lot more going on and I wanted to hear some other people's thoughts on it especially because I did leave the movie pretty muddled.
Re: Spring Breakers
I love Spring Breakers, gotta be one of my favorites. I watched it in theaters when I was 14, because I needed to see the James Franco/Riff Raff ‘Alien’ charter lol. It really does nail the dread that sets in when you’re young and realize nothing is what you sign up for. I’d say it’s actually pretty influential to gen Z in a low key way.
Re: Spring Breakers
yeah even though the movies technically about millennials it does capture a gen z kind of mindset. In general I think Korine is able to understand youth culture really well.
Re: Spring Breakers
I had the capital P Privilege of seeing Spring Breakers in theaters on a night packed with my classmates. Went with a handful of close friends who for the most part "got"/appreciated Harmony Korine which was clearly true of absolutely nobody else in the room. Hardly ever gotten to see something play out so perfectly--extremely satisfying walk out of the theater in a throng of "what the hell was that?"s
i like what you said about not "blaming" the characters. Gummo is one of my favorite movies and a lot of people say it/Harmony "tries too hard" and I disagree. I used to think it was just some shit he thought was beautiful he wanted to show you but honestly I don't even think it's necessarily what he thinks is beautiful, just what he thinks "is." not necessarily "romanticizing" or "demonizing" and honestly not necessarily "showing" or "telling" either. (in the show v tell "debate")
